NCFDD - Week 3: The Academic's Guide to Working with a Literary Agent

10-30-2017 2:00 PM

Would you like to reach beyond the academy by publishing a popular book for the broad public? Do you dream of obtaining building a lucrative writing career? Are you interested in partnering with a publishing expert who can advocate for you, negotiate your book contracts and obtain a significant advance on your behalf? "The Academic's Guide to Working with a Literary Agent" is a three part webinar series designed to equip academics with a framework and game plan for obtaining literary representation. Drawing upon her own experience signing with the same literary agency that brokered Barack Obama's first book deal, Dr. Crystal Marie Fleming will demystify the world of trade publishing and explain how and why academics decide to partner with book agents. By the end of the workshop, participants will have clearly defined commercial writing goals, a database of similar books, a list of appropriate agencies and insight into the nuts and bolts of collaborating with a literary agent. Part 3 includes:

Part 3: Working With Your Agent
* Keys to maintaining a supportive relationship with your agent (or: how to not piss off your agent)
* Polishing your proposal
* What exactly is the "submission" process?
* Maintaining your sanity while "on submission"
* The standard components of a book deal
* "Show me the money!": Figuring out the kind of advance your project might garner
* How your agent can assist with your academic and commercial writing
